Cantiones
Cantiones was founded in 1982 by Michael
Smith, the then organist of the Parish Church of St. Oswald,
King & Martyr, Oswestry. Under its original name "Cantiones
Sacrae" the choir comprised 15 voices and set its sights on
performing some of the more challenging music in the chamber
choir repertoire.
Before long it swelled to well over 20 voices and concerts were
given as far afield as Chester and Shrewsbury, as well as an
appearance at the Llangollen International Festival. Cantiones
dropped the "Sacrae" from its title in the mid-nineties when its
repertoire widened to include more and more of the quality
secular music available.
Over the years Cantiones has had no more than a handful of
Musical Directors. Michael Smith was followed by Geoffrey
Talbot, then Chris Argent, Christopher Symons and John
Clenaghan, and currently it flourishes under the baton of Gerry
Howe. At the present time Cantiones is considered to be towards
the top of the premier division of choirs in the area.

Ifton Band
Ifton Band Oswestry aim
is to promote the enjoyment of brass band music both through
playing and listening. Founded in 1916 the band became a major
force competing in numerous competitions finally reaching
section one in the 1990's. Unfortunately the membership dwindled
to just six junior members in the mid 90's and almost folded.
Through the efforts of the committee and parents the band has
been slowly rebuilt through focussing on the younger members of
the band. Currently the band membership stands at around 20
players consisting mainly of family members.

Llanymynech Amateur
Dramatic Society
Llanymynech Amateur Dramatic Society - known
throughout the area as the LADS - has been in existence for 15
years, bringing live theatre to the village and drawing an
ever-increasing following from as far afield as Oswestry,
Welshpool and Shrewsbury.
From humble beginnings, the Society has flourished and its
reputation has grown. A large collection of medals and
silverware from various festivals bears this out, but the
primary aim of the LADS was and always will be to provide
reasonably-priced live entertainment to the highest possible
standard. To this end three productions a year are staged - one
just before Christmas, one in late spring and one in early
summer.
Since 1992 the LADS have tackled all manner of plays, from light
comedies and period pieces, to innovative new plays and
ambitious spectacles with a cast of 50.

Oswestry Recorded
Music Society
The Oswestry Recorded Music Society was
founded in 1958, the brainchild of employees of the Post
Office’s telephone department (then part of the state-owned GPO
and the predecessor to British Telecom). They were based at an
engineering and administration centre located just outside the
town, former country house Brogyntyn Hall, One of those founder
members is our current President, Edward Tanner; another was the
late Peter Lander (a former Treasurer).
We remain the only RMS in Shropshire the
nearest being in Cheshire, Staffs and Wolverhampton. The very
first meeting was held in the old Public Library formerly
situated at the rear of the Guildhall and during these early
years the Society struggled along with attendances sometimes as
low as six. However after several moves to various types of
accommodation it was agreed to move to the then newly built
Parish Centre in the middle of town near the Broad Walk. At this
time it was a gamble as the room hire costs were far more
expensive than anything before, however that gamble paid off due
to the central location, reasonable acoustics and comfort levels
and refreshment facilities. From that time membership steadily
increased peaking at around 100 until recently although we have
about sixty paid-up members currently with attendances usually
between 30 and 50.
